Wildfire Smoke

Seattle, Washington, August 2020

That iconic skyline etched in my mind is more and more difficult to see. The edges blur in the wildfire smoke as we fly down the interstate.

“We’re just looking for an exit to get out of the wildfire smoke!” she screams at the phone. “Damn Siri, that bitch won’t give me the answer I need! Just pull over!”

I exhaled, relieved, “I see one here!”

“Thank God! I want out of this city,” she sobbed. Her resolve to stay strong dissipated once the end was near.

Her fear is still stoked, regardless of falling rain.
