My boys, my GEMs, they are the greatest joy in my life.
When deciding the path we’d take in our home education years ago, I knew I wanted my children to be eager learners – not get burned out as I did in high school.
Oh mama, always trying to prevent the pain we experienced – isn’t that what we all do for our children? We want them to have an easier, more enriching, experience than we had.
So for me, that’s how it started. Once I gave birth to my children, I couldn’t imagine giving them to someone else for the best parts of their days – doing all the fun stuff with them!
Selfishly, I wanted to spend that time with them. After a cross-country move, and a couple failed preschool experiences, we pulled our oldest from kindergarten after the first few weeks of classes.
It’s not been an easy peasy journey, but it’s been worth it. Worth it to see my boys be happy, healthy, emotionally intelligent young men.
They love to read, figure out problems, build things, game, and learn. They draw amazing comparisons, have ruthless analysis, and propose new ideas and concepts to their father and I.
I am astounded daily be their empathy, compassion, and lavish love of learning. Our homeschool mantra: GEMs, or Growing Eager Minds – minds that are open to new experiences, education, and being the change they wish to see in the world – these are the men I want to send out into the world.
It may not have turned out the way we thought it would oh-so-many-years-ago, but we wouldn’t want it any other way.
What is your homeschool mantra?
