Day 8: Story Map
Be a physical map of an area, plotting a diagram, a series of images or scraps of paper, but more likely a narrative, my story maps evolve fluidly through my writing. Based on locations, experiences, and ideas that come to me from my experience, or the experiences I hear from others, the stories bleed onto the pages.
Preferably in black ink.
I can’t say I always use a story map, nor that I will, but in particularly structuring stories for the NaNoWriMo events, I find the addage ‘an ounce of prevention’ does wonders for making the word count add up more quickly. By having an idea of the background, where your story is going, who is in your story — even if it takes a sharp turn left, you can recover and continue on — meeting, and usually exceeding, your wordcount goal.
Do you story map?
Are you participating in #InstaWrimo this month? What could be better – my love of Instagram and my love of NaNoWriMo?
Haven’t heard of it? Are you being creative?
NaNoWriMo is kicking off March 2018 with an inspirational BANG! If you participate in my 100 Word Wednesdays, Sonya’s Three Line Tales, or better yet: Franks’ Tuesday Photo Challenge, you’re familiar with the concept of a picture being worth at least a few words.
Ha! I can barely follow a real map, much less a story map. That’s impressive, though.
