Wind-Up Week 20: 100 Word Wednesday

Week 20

Thanks for stopping by for Week 20 of 100 Word Wednesdays!

Surprisingly, this image was taken last year — I had almost forgotten about it, but couldn’t help to see the ‘End School Zone’ sign next to an enormous line of Caucasian adults. While there are a few people of color in this image, the majority show little diversity. Are the people trying to get into the ‘School Zone’? Are they on their way out? Why are only adults cued entering or exiting the ‘School Zone’?

I took this during the Washington State Primaries for the 2016 Presidential Election, which I was voted Madame Secretary for the proceedings. I find in the Greater Seattle area, there is surprising diversity of people working and residing here representing global ethnicities; this image is not representative of that diversity. One reason may be that Greater Seattle continues to experience a tech-boom which draws employees globally, but those global employees do not necessarily have the right to vote, depending on their citizenship status and how they were employed as expats from their native countries also make a difference in their voting rights.

Some of the people I know come to this country for employment opportunities, but never plan to stay or become American citizens. Others, however, seek out employment opportunities in The States to legally find a path to citizenship.

I find there are many stories, many opinions, and many perspectives – much like our weekly writing challenges!

Without further ado, thank you for joining me on my journey and sharing your stories with me and our writing group ❤
